My Experience Doing the Medical Medium's Liver Cleanse: Days 4-6
We are Doing the Medical Medium’s Liver Cleanse!
Day 4, 5, 6 are done and here’s what happened…
Salad, salad and more salad! Bitter greens are bitter and get old fast. I have to be honest they are not my favourite but according to the Medical Medium these are the best to consume when doing a liver cleanse. Leafy greens are nutrient dense, antioxidant rich, full of cancer fighting properties, support your gut biome, contain lots of magnesium & other vitamins & minerals, are packed with fibre, and have the superpower to restore your health. Eating greens in general help to expel and purge trapped debris and waste by sweeping and cleaning the lining of your digestive system.
In my household, half of us liked the salads where I followed the recipe, and the other half liked it better when I used the blander softer lettuces like butter, red, head and romaine.
The light, orange juice, garlic no oil salad dressing Anthony Williams recommends is very tasty and refreshing but it gets very boring when you have to eat 6 salads. It’s not motivating enough to keep you chewing and chomping on the copious amounts of lettuce and vegetables you have to consume. It encouraged me to go on the search for other options. I ended up using coconut aminos, which is a fermented form of coconut tree sap & sea salt. It doesn’t have any fat or gluten in it, and I like to use it as a substitute for soy sauce. It does contain about 90 mgs of salt per teaspoon, which is a lot if you are on a low sodium diet for high blood pressure, but it’s much lower in salt than regular soy sauce, which contain 280 mgs per teaspoon. I buy “Naked Coconuts” Soy-Free Soy Sauce substitute. Its soy, wheat and GF, certified organic, non GMO, MSG free, Kosher & Vegan.
Miso Coconut Aminos Dressing
1 chopped medium red or white onion
¼ cup of coconut aminos
2 tbsp miso paste (optional)
3 tbsp water
I combine the miso, water and coconut aminos and then place the chopped onion into it allowing it to soak for a while. The onion soaks up the flavour. Toss it with the salad at the time of serving and enjoy.
Some other ingredient options for no oil salad dressing are using shallots, scallions, chives, ginger, ground dry mustard, organic Greek spice, Italian spice, organic garlic powder, pepper, & maple syrup. If trying to make something like an herb and vinegar dressing, I’d just use lime juice to replace the vinegar.
Buying the celery from Costco was cheaper than buying it from the general store. You can get it pre-cut and washed. The only pitfall is its packaged in plastic. I love celery and have been drinking celery juice plain for over a year now in the morning. I love how it makes me feel. Adding the apple just makes it a bit sweeter, which was nice for the newcomers trying it out for the first time.
The Liver rescue smoothie recipe is delicious. Some things I learnt from our last time was to use riper bananas. This helps to overpower the funky papaya taste. Get ripe good dragonfruits. The last time our dragonfruits were white inside and very bland tasting. This time they were a beautiful fuchsia colour inside and delicious. Combining it with papaya, bananas and wild blueberries makes it turn into this rich purple smoothie that you can eat with a spoon. When we are finished with this cleanse, I’m going to make it more often and put it with my oatmeal as a morning breakfast bowl.
Why wild blueberries instead of regular blueberries? According to the Medical Medium they are full of ancient wisdom, can survive an apocalypse, are extra effective at metal detoxing, a powerful brain food, a potent prebiotic and packed full of antioxidants. I was able to get the wild blueberries in bulk at Costco.
I also recommend pre-peeling and cubing the papaya into the portion sizes you will need. I made the mistake of sticking 2 whole papayas chopped up into 1 freezer bag, which meant I had to defrost it in the microwave once I discovered it had formed into one massive block. The other option would be to lay it in cubed pieces on parchment paper on a sheet pan and put it into the deep freezer. Once the pieces have frozen you can put them into a bag, so they won’t all stick together.
I instead defrosted my massive block so I could cut it up into ¼ cup blocks. Once I got a mini frozen block to fit into my Vitamix, I discovered it wouldn’t blend that easily. I’m on day 4 of a liver cleanse and it doesn’t take much to become frustrated and impatient. My preplanned papaya freezing had turned into a much longer ordeal than I expected, so I grabbed the tamper and started pounding at the frozen block without the proper lid on the top of my Vitamix. Suddenly I was splattered in purple smoothie as the block began to break up, and I heard this loud clunk. I quickly switched off the machine and discovered I’d taken the tip off my tamper. I was now over this fiasco I’d created in my kitchen and just poured it into the glasses and hoped that no one would notice.
Later my daughter came to me and said “Mom – I keep finding all these black bits in my smoothie.” I sheepishly explained what had happened and grumbled at her to just pick it out. Being her ocean conservationist activist self, she moaned back at me that she was a bit concerned she was eating harmful micro-plastics. Just as she said this, she pulled out this huge black plastic chunk. My eyes opened wide like a deer caught in the headlights and we all burst out gut rolling in laughter. I’m still laughing as I’m writing this! Yay, for being able to activate our radiant circuits in a moment of exasperation! Laughter is the best way to change denser emotional vibrations, that one can experience on a liver cleanse, into happy light joyful vibrations.
If we weren’t growling or laughing at one another we were talking about going to the bathroom – a lot! All the lemon water, celery juice, smoothies and vegetables had us visiting the porcelain palace at least every 30 minutes.
“When the liver is harmonious, there is never stress or tension. People with vital livers are calm. They have unerring judgment, naturally effective as leaders and decision-makers.” Paul Pitchford, author of Healing with Whole Foods
It wasn’t until day 5 that I started to see less grumpy faces. It really got me thinking about the emotions of anger, frustration, irritation, annoyance, impatience and basic edginess. Having emotions is perfectly healthy but when they become a pattern or a habit, it's time to look at what we are holding onto. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) the liver has an emotional component of anger and when repressed it can build up.
The Liver’s Worst Enemies can be described as simply the stress of modern life. This includes toxins in our environment, food, water and make-up, excessive computer time, excessive oils, too much salt, too many hot spices, sugars, refined foods, caffeine, overeating, eating when you’re angry, eating in a rush, eating with people you don’t like, and especially stuffing emotions inside.
Liver’s Best Friends can be described as a moderated and balanced lifestyle, going to bed at a decent time, eating leafy greens, detox cleansing periodically, juicing, doing your daily energy routine of exercises and or yoga stretching and learning to express emotions consciously rather than keeping them trapped inside.
